As Sanskrit and English are part of the Indo-European language group, writing numbers in Sanskrit functions in the same way as writing numbers in English. Numbers 0 through 9 have individual symbols, which, can be combined to make other numbers from 10 onwards.
Like English, Sanskrit numbers use a base 10, decimal, system.
Sanskrit numbers 1 to 4 are declined; there are instances where the end of the number must be changed in order to correctly form a sentence depending on the context.
nb: for the purposes of this website declination will not be look at. For information on declining Sanskrit numbers we recommend the guide at Sanskrit & Sánscrito.
